Aquascaping & Hardscape Styling

Seiryu Stone vs. Dragon Stone

Which Hardscape Is Safe for Your Water pH?

Creating a natural underwater landscape requires selecting the right hardscape materials. However, many beginners do not realize that popular aquascaping stones possess distinct chemical properties that can dramatically alter tap water parameter stability—specifically pH and Carbonate Hardness (KH).

[ HARDSCAPE INFLUENCE ON WATER CHEMISTRY ]

[ SEIRYU STONE ] ──► Leaches Calcium & Carbonates ──► Raises pH & KH (Hardens Water) [ DRAGON STONE ] ──► Completely Inert Clay Mineral ──► Zero Effect on pH & KH (Stable Water)

Deep-Dive Stone Comparison

Seiryu Stone (Calcareous Slate)

Renowned for its deep gray color, sharp jagged edges, and white calcite veins, Seiryu stone is a staple in Iwagumi-style layouts. However, because it contains calcium carbonate, it continuously leaches minerals into the water column.

● Effect on Chemistry: Gradually raises pH, Carbonate Hardness (KH), and Total Hardness (GH).

● Best Used For: Hard water setups, livebearer tanks (Guppies/Platies), or setups with active aqua-soil that naturally buffers pH down.

● Acid Test: Applying a drop of vinegar to Seiryu stone causes immediate fizzing due to the presence of calcium.

Dragon Stone / Ohko Stone (Inert Clay Structure)

Recognized by its warm amber/clay hues and unique honeycomb-like cratered texture, Dragon Stone is formed from hardened mud and clay deposits.

● Effect on Chemistry: Completely Inert. It has zero effect on pH, KH, or GH levels

.● Best Used For: Soft water setups, delicate shrimp tanks (like Crystal Reds), and densely planted setups requiring soft, stable parameters.

How to Build a Lush Moss Wall or Carpet in a Low-Tech Tank

Foreground carpeting plants like Dwarf Baby Tears (HC) or Glossostigma typically demand high-intensity lighting and pressurized CO_2 injection. However, you can achieve a dense, bright green carpet or living rear wall in a low-tech setup (no CO_2) by utilizing hardy aquatic moss species.

[ STEP-BY-STEP MOSS CARPET SETUP FLOW ]

[ STEP 1 ] ──► Sandwich moss layer evenly between stainless steel mesh sheets.

[ STEP 2 ] ──► Secure edges using aquarium-safe zip ties or fishing line.

[ STEP 3 ] ──► Press flat onto substrate using suction cups or small anchor stones.

[ STEP 4 ] ──► Trim growth every 3 weeks to encourage thick horizontal runner shoots.

Top 3 Moss Species for Low-Tech Carpeting

1. Java Moss (Vesicularia dubyana)

Fast-growing, virtually indestructible, and thrives under basic lighting.

2. Christmas Moss (Vesicularia montagnei)

Features distinct pine-tree-shaped fronds that create a lush, textured carpet.

3. Fissidens Fontanus (Phoenix Moss)

A delicate, feathery deep-green moss that grows in rounded, velvet-like cushions.

The Stainless Steel Mesh Method

The easiest way to build a uniform carpet or vertical background wall is using 316 marine-grade stainless steel mesh pads:

1. Spread a thin, even layer of moss across a mesh pad (avoid thick clumps, which rot underneath from lack of light).

2. Place a second mesh sheet over the top and bind the edges tightly with line or zip ties.

3. Lay the pad flat on your substrate or secure it to the back glass using small suction cups.

4. Trim fronds every 2 to 3 weeks. Regular trimming forces the moss to branch laterally, creating a dense, velvety mat.
