FAQ -Water Quality Disruption

  1. Why Is My Aquarium Water Cloudy and How Do I Fix It Fast?

Nothing causes panic like waking up to find a cloudy, milky, or hazy tank. Before pouring chemicals into your aquarium, it helps to understand the exact type of cloudiness you are dealing with.

The Three Types of Cloudy Water

  1. White/Milky Cloudiness (Bacterial Bloom): Common in young or recently changed tanks. Harmless nitrifying bacteria multiply rapidly in the water column as they colonize.
  2. Green Water (Algae Bloom): Microscopic suspended algae caused by excess light photoperiods or high nitrate/phosphate levels.
  3. Brown or Gray Haze (Detritus/Substrate Suspensions): Caused by unwashed substrate, dusty food, or inadequate mechanical media.

Pro Tip: Never wash your filter cartridges with cold tap water during a bacterial bloom! Chlorinated water destroys beneficial bacteria, causing the bloom to reset.

  1. Why Are My Fish Swimming at the Top and Gasping for Air?

If your fish are lingering at the water surface, breathing heavily, or gulping air, your aquarium is experiencing a critical oxygen depletion or ammonia/nitrite toxicity emergency.

Root Causes & Emergency Actions

  • Low Dissolved Oxygen: Warm water holds less oxygen. If surface movement is stagnant, oxygen levels drop fast.

○ Fix: Instantly raise your filter outflow to break the water surface, or add an air pump and airstone.

  • Ammonia or Nitrite Toxicity: Chemical spikes damage gill tissues, making it difficult for fish to absorb oxygen.

○ Fix: Perform an immediate 50% water change using dechlorinated water.

  • High CO_2 Accumulation: In planted tanks, excessive carbon dioxide injection suffocates fish.

  1. How Do I Get Rid of White Spots (Ich) on My Fish?

White Spot Disease (Ichthyophthirius multifiliis, or “Ich”) is one of the most common external parasites in freshwater aquariums. It looks like sprinkled salt grains across your fish’s fins and body.

[ THE LIFE CYCLE OF ICH PARASITES ] [ 1. TROPHONT ] ──► [ 2. TOMONT ] ──► [ 3. THERONT ] Visible white spot on Falls off into substrate; Free-swimming infectious state; fish skin (Protected). multiplies rapidly. ONLY stage vulnerable to medication!

The 3-Step Heat & Medication Protocol

  1. Raise Water Temperature: Gradually increase temperature to 82°F–86°F (28°C–30°C) over 24 hours to accelerate the parasite’s life cycle.
  2. Remove Carbon Media: Take active carbon out of your filter; carbon strips active medications out of the water.
  3. Dose Copper or Malachite Green: Treat the entire display tank for a minimum of 10 to 14 days to destroy all free-swimming theronts.
  1. Why Is My Aquarium Heater Light Flashing or Temperature Dropping?

Aquarium heaters are the most critical mechanical life-support tool in your setup—and when they fail, aquatic livestock can experience rapid, dangerous thermal shock.

Troubleshooting Heater Failures

  • Internal Thermostat Calibration Drift: Mechanical bimetallic strips inside glass heaters loosen over time, causing display temperature variances.
  • Heater Under-Sizing: If your ambient room temperature drops during winter, an undersized heater (e.g., 50W in a 29G tank) cannot keep up.
  • Sticking Contacts: Heaters can fail “ON” (boiling the tank) or “OFF” (freezing the tank).

Safety Rule: Always plug your heater into an external digital temperature controller. An external controller cuts power automatically if the internal thermostat fails.
